The Lace Mat - Round 1

I agreed to join in on Jon Yusoff's Lace Mat Tat-along, and have finally completed Round 1!  Jon has beautifully translated/drawn this pattern from the 1930's, and it was just what I was looking for.  I had been considering making another doily, but couldn't quite decide on which one.  This is a perfect project - and being a Tat-along, it keeps me on task to finish.

So, here's Round 1:

I did not make that first picot large enough, so my center rings look too "squished".  I have been pondering starting again (the perfectionist in me) but I've decided to continue with it the way it is and see what other imperfections I can create along the way.   There is no doubt that I may be doing this a second time!

I've chosen to use a taupe/brown pearl cotton along with a light tan to keep my doily somewhat neutral in color.  The next round will be the lighter tan color.

In weather news, it's getting to be Fall rather quickly here in Minnesota.  We had a beautiful weekend with temperatures in the low 80's F, and today the high was only about 62 F.  Back to wearing (GASP!) socks.

My vegetable garden has been tilled up, and most of my flowers are done.  Except for a few autumn sunflowers and morning glories that look a little sad and weedy from this distance:

But I think they are quite beautiful when I get up close:

And, here's a bird we haven't seen much of in our yard - a  Northern Flicker.  We had a whole flock of flickers today!

  1. Ha! I'm doing the lace mat too! We'll have to see where we are on Saturday!

I love the picture of the sunflower, you are SO talented!

Love the colors for the doily too.a

  2. Wonderful flower photos! I never knew there were red sunflowers! Gorgeous! We used to see Yellow-Shafted Flickers here in our yard, but they haven't been around for a long time. Looked similar to your photo. Not happy about the cooler weather coming our way, too (Western PA). Can't we have 70s for awhile? It's been perfect the last couple of days.

Nice work on the doily so far. Looks fine to me.

  3. I am hoping to start doing this doily but I have a couple of things to do first.
Lovely sunflowers and morning flowers. The autumn (fall) is coming quickly here in the UK too, not that we have had much of a summer.

  4. I love the color you're using for the Tat-along! I have the same problem... too small picots on the center ring. My other problem is that I put my tatting some place safe to finish my cross, and now I can't find it. Maybe that's a sign to start over! ;-)

  5. What a great post! And yes, after oohing and ahhing over those gorgeous sunflowers and glorious morning glories, I DID try saying "flock of flickers" three times fast. LOL!

  6. Pretty sunflowers...we get flickers occasionally in our junipers...the other day one was down on the ground mining the crack in the driveway...boy did it look out of place down there, it took me a minute to figure out what kind of bird it was...they look off kilter to me on the ground.

  7. Flock of flickers ... say that a few times for a great tongue-twister!!! Whoops ... I just noticed someone else mentioned that too : ) Your photos are lovely & so is your mat. I had hoped to join in on that tat-along but just don't have the time : (

  8. Oh I love flickers. I see them now and then once a year when they come through our neighborhood. Delightful. Also delightful, your pretty flowers and the tatting. I tried to teach myself once, rather unsuccessfully.

  9. Tatting looks nice and waiting to see your next round. Love the sunflowers and flickers. Our hummingbirds are dwindled down to 3 from 15. It is time to move south!!
